Northstar is fast becoming a favorite for many thanks to recent investments in the area including the ski-in, ski-out access offered by the new Ritz-Carlton. Known for its well-groomed runs and terrain parks, Northstar peaks out at just over 8,600 feet and averages 350 inches of snow each season. It boasts the most snow making capability of any of the North Lake Tahoe ski areas. Northstar’s 97 trails are skewed toward the intermediate skier (60%) but there also are 347 acres of gate-accessible advanced terrain.
Alpine Meadows has earned the reputation as the laid-back option for skiing in North Lake Tahoe. Its total vertical of around 1,800 feet can be explored by means of 100+ trails served by 13 lifts. Skiers and boarders swear that Alpine Mountain’s powder lasts for days and the resort typically has the longest ski season in the area.
Then there is Palisades Tahoe. The well-known host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Palisades Tahoe offers 3,600 skiable acres and is the largest of the North Lake Tahoe resorts. Squaw skiers and boarders have access to extreme steeps and bowls along with large beginner areas, terrain parks and pipes. Enthusiasts will find more than 150 trails accessed by 30 lifts. Sugar Bowl claims to have the highest annual snowfall in the area (more than 500 inches) and it offers 1,650 skiable acres and just over 100 trails-45% rated at the Intermediate level. The Backcountry Adventure Center offers guided excursions and Sugar Bowl’s Switching Yard Terrain Park is actually a series of three progressive parks with a dedicated chair lift.
