How Breckenridge, CO Got It’s Name
Did you know that the name Breckenridge has Scottish roots?
Rooted from the Northern Old English words, bracken and rigg (ridge). It’s a habitational name, describing the area that the family came from or where they owned land.

The story goes….In 1859, when Breckenridge was founded, the determined people of Breckenridge, Colorado wanted their very own post office. Thinking that naming their town after a famous politician from Kentucky would do the trick, they call their town “Breckinridge” after John C. Breckinridge (who is also the youngest ever Vice President of the United States at 36 years old).
The flattery must have worked, short there after, Breckenridge gained a post office.
However, a few years later the Civil War started and Mr. Breckinridge started working for the Confederates, something the pro-Union towns people did not like. The citizens then changed the “i” to an “e” and it has been Breckenridge ever since.
