The History Of Snowboarding

1910 – Wooden planks are used to “steer” down the snow.

1965 – Michigan engineer created a toy for his daughter with 2 skis put together. He called this “Snurfing”

1975 – Dimitrije Milovich uses cafeteria trays to slide down snow, constructing the “Winterstick”.

1977 – Jake Burton Carpenter founded Burton Snowboards, selling them for $38 per board.

1983 – 1st World Championship Half-Pipe Competition in Soda Springs, CA.

1985 – Only 7% of ski areas in the U.S. allow snowboarding.

2004 – 6.6 Million participants are active in the sport of snowboarding!

2009 – 2010 : 8.2 Million Snowboarders in USA and Canada (combined).
